Debo Adebayo popularly known as Mr Macaroni is a Nigerian actor, comedian, entrepreneur and social media influencer well known for his phrase ‘ooin you’re doing well’, ‘freaky freaky’, ‘Are you there?!’. Life and career

Early Life

Mr Macaroni was born in Lagos State, Nigeria into a family of 10. His father is a journalist, while his mother is an educationist. He describes his childhood as ‘simple’ and always states that he was inspired by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy. He gained admission to study Creative arts at Redeemer’s University, Osun State.

Career

Mr Macaroni started his career as an actor but he recently came into limelight after starting a series of comedy skits. In most of his skits, he usually plays the role of a sugar daddy, looking for a side chick and its always full of adventures.
Mr Macaroni has been featured in a number movies and soap operas before starting the ‘Mr Macaroni’ series. He stated that at a point in his life, he stopped getting movies roles and it began to appear like he didn’t know what he was doing.

Education

Mr Macaroni’s university years were filled with drama, to say the least. Mr Macaroni attended a total of four universities. His first admission was at Lead City University, a private university which did not have the accreditation for Law.

Mr Macaroni then left to study Law at another University, this time outside Nigeria — Houdegbe North American University, Cotonou. He later left the institution after he fought with one of his lecturers. At this point, he was ready to give up on obtaining a university degree.

Mr Macaroni returned to Nigeria and then headed to Afe Babalola University, another private university located at Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. He hoped to major in Theatre Arts but ended up studying English and Media Studies because the school did not have a Theatre Arts department. He stayed in the school for two years before he became disinterested.

For Mr Macaroni, the fourth time was the charm, as he finally got admitted to study Theatre Arts at Redeemer’s University, Osun State, where he graduated with a second class upper degree in 2018.

Film Making

1998-2015

Mr Macaroni’s love for acting began at the tender age of six when he would mimic TV personalities at their home. He also acted in school dramas before being professionally trained at the PEFTI Film Institute, Lagos.

2016-present

Mr Macaroni’s career, so far, has been meteoric. What started as a hobby for him has become a full-time job. The Instagram sensation has revealed he plans to stick to short skits, saying he won’t be venturing into standup comedy anytime soon.

“Stand up comedy is about standing up to make people laugh. I can hold a crowd, I do MC gigs, I host events and all of that, I don’t crack jokes, I’m an actor but I can interpret comic roles to the best of my ability. I don’t think I’m gifted when it comes to stand-up comedy like the way Basketmouth and Bovi does. I can say some stuff that will make you laugh but not stand up comedy”.

Mr Macaroni’s style of comedy is a blend of sexuality and moral issues. His hilarious comedy skits about a generous older man (a brown agbada-wearing sugar daddy) offering women money in anticipation of sexual company usually end with a moral message.

The Name “Mr Macaroni”

For fans wondering how the funny entertainer came about his nickname, he disclosed this in an interview:

“I was on the set of Face 2 Face, playing the role of an extra. At the time, the character I was playing was nameless. You know these characters they name as ‘Boy 1’ and ‘Boy 2’. The director now wanted for the character to have a name, so when I was about going he asked me to give myself a name and from nowhere I just said Mr Macaroni with the mindset that what we were doing was a comic and Mr Macaroni was supposed to be one happy jolly fellow. So I just said Mr Macaroni and the name stuck.”

Mr Macaroni and many other celebrities led the EndSARS protest.

End SARS is a decentralised social movement, and series of mass protests against police brutality in Nigeria. The slogan calls for the disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a notorious unit of the Nigerian Police with a long record of abuses. The protests which takes its name from the slogan started in 2017 as a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #EndSARS to demand the disbanding of the unit by the Nigerian government. After experiencing a revitalisation in October 2020 following more revelations of the abuses of the unit, mass demonstrations occurred throughout the major cities of Nigeria, accompanied by vociferous outrage on social media platforms. About 28 million tweets bearing the hashtag have been accumulated on Twitter alone.[8] Solidarity protests and demonstrations by Nigerians in diaspora and sympathizers occurred in many major cities of the world. The protests is notable for its patronage by a demographic that is made of entirely young Nigerians. The movement has since expanded to include demands for good and accountable governance.

Within a few days of renewed protests, on 11 October 2020, the Nigerian Police Force announced that it was dissolving the unit with immediate effect. The move was widely received as a triumph of the demonstrations. However, it was noted in many quarters that similar announcements had been made in recent years to pacify the public without the unit actually being disbanded, and that the government had merely planned to reassign and review SARS officers to medical centres rather than disband the unit entirely. Protests have continued accordingly, and the Nigerian government has maintained a pattern of violent repression including the killing of demonstrators. There have been international demonstrations in solidarity with those happening in the country, and the movement has also grown increasingly critical of Muhammadu Buhari’s government response to the protests.

SARS officers have been alleged to profile young Nigerians, mostly males, based on fashion choices, tattoos and hairstyles. They were also known to mount illegal road blocks, conduct unwarranted checks and searches, arrest and detain without warrant or trial, rape women, and extort young male Nigerians for driving exotic vehicles and using laptops and iPhones. Nigerians have shared both stories and video evidence of how officers of SARS engaged in kidnapping, murder, theft, rape, torture, unlawful arrests, humiliation, unlawful detention, extrajudicial killings and extortion of Nigerian citizens. A large section of the victims of the abuses of SARS have been young male Nigerians.

REOPENING OF LEKKI TOLL GATE

After the Nigerian government announced that activities at the Lekki toll gate would restart, Nigerians not satisfied with the decision to restart activities at a symbolic site where reportedly unarmed citizens died during the End SARS protest called for a fresh protest to start at 7am on 13 February 2021.

On 13 February 2021 security agencies were at the site, reportedly armed, and awaiting the protesters. It was reported that a Nigerian internet comedian named Mr Macaroni and others who came to observe the peaceful protest were arrested and were later released the same day after invasion of thousands of voices and Reno Omokri’s sent lawyers.
